Antone Youla: Well an f-15 has to take off from the ground. An f-14 has the convenience of taking off from a carrier deck. Having an aircraft carrier allows our military to launch fighters anywhere in the world. That's what I think.
Travis Colomb: The USN has more aircraft than USAF because of 2 reasons. First the chief naval aircraft the F/A 18 is cheaper than the chief USAF aircraft or at least the aircraft USAF wants to use the F22 Raptor. Second the USN is carrier oriented meaning that the USN needs many aircraft and also aircraft sink more vessels and support ground troops better that destroyers.
Chanda Wittwer: Aircraft are needed to protect fleets and to assault other countries. The aircraft defending the fleets need somewhere to refuel, rearm, etc. because they can't just be flying with the fleet then fly to a base to refuel then fly back forever. It just can't work. Its a waste of fuel and a waste of time. So aircraft needed a mobile airfield, th! e carrier. The carrier is a naval vessel though and thus the aircraft on it are navy aircraft. Aircraft that operate out of airfields are under the USAF's jurisdiction. So, when you're attacking another country(which is quite frequent) you need something to carry your aircraft as you don't have an airbase in said country yet, thus the carrier comes in again with its aircraft which are under USN jurisdiction....Show more
Gladys Worthing: If we didn't have to be the world's enforcers, we could keep the Navy within our territorial waters and leave the air patrols to land-based aircraft. But since we are the only country currently capable of keeping civilization safe, and we don't always have air bases where we need them, we need Navy and Marine Aviation to pick up the slack , or to get things started for us while we acquire land bases.
Donte Hamme: Two thirds of the world is covered by ocean and the air force cannot possibly patrol all of it. A naval air wing i! s the best way to project power in the oceans quickly and deci! sively. That being said, the navy does not have long range bombers or large tankers either so it balances out. BTW, the army has nearly as many boats as the navy...mostly for transport of heavy equipment.
